Safety & Planning

Peace Place believes in being proactive against domestic violence.  We think it is better to prevent violence than react to an incident.  Here are some steps adult victims can take to make themselves safer:

Safety Steps:   911 or Our Hotline 770-586-0927

bullet

Talk with a friend or relative or Peace Place (770-586-0927) about your situation.  Support systems are essential if you are going through a tough time.

bullet

Arrange a signal with a neighbor to let them know when you need help.  (i.e.  turning on a porch light during the day or pulling down a shade in a particular window shade)

bullet

Keep some money stored in a secret place so that you have access to it in an emergency.  Also store copies of important papers (insurance, social security cards) and keys.  Be sure to include some coins for a public pay phone.  If you would like an emergency 911 cell phone, call Peace Place and we will arrange to send one to you.

bullet

Educate yourself on the law and resources in your community.  Temporary protective orders (TPOs) are available for protection.  A TPO must be filed in the county where the abuser lives.  In Banks, Barrow and Jackson counties, you may go to the District Attorney’s office for assistance in completing one.  Visit the Georgia Legal Services website (www.glsp.org) for further assistance.

bullet

Also be aware that you are your best advocate.  Speak up for your rights in the criminal justice system.

For Children:

bullet

Teach your children how to call 911 in the event of an emergency.

bullet

Have your children run for help to a safe place during a violent incident.  Don’t allow them to get in the middle of an argument where they can be hurt.

bullet

Make an “ID” kit of your child.  They are available at most police stations.  Peace Place offers them also free of charge.

bullet

Tell the children “it’s not their fault” that violence occurs in their home.

bullet

Tell the children to tell another trusted adult like a teacher if they need to talk.  Don’t take this as a betrayal.
