So often women become trapped in a cycle of violence, afraid to stay but at the same time afraid to leave. Abusers do not just hit with fist, they do not restrict abuse and control simply to the physical. So much of Domestic Violence is emotional/psychological. Many times the abuser wants to control the entire life of the victim, isolating the victim from both friends and family, removing any source of comfort or aid from the victim. It is with such power that abusers threaten that without them (the abuser), the victim would be unable to make it on their own; and because the victim has lost her sense of self worth and doesn't realize how strong she really is, how many options she has, she stays.
Peace Place is trying to end this cycle of violence, we are trying to give women the encouragement they need to take a stand and speak up for themselves. We offer a safe place to stay, training in many areas, we help with finding jobs for those in need and most of all we help victims regain control of their lives.
Victims: stand up for yourself, you do have a safe place to go, you do have people willing to help.
Those of you who know someone in a situation: Don't assume they want to stay, don't assume its just as easy as walking out of the house. Abuse is a game of power, encourage those you know in trouble and simply be there for them; be their support.
If you ever need someone to talk to about your situation feel free to call the Peace Place 24-Hour Hotline at 770-586-0927.
You can help break the cycle.
