Breaking the Silence: Launching Our Blog for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Every October, communities across the country come together to shine a light on an issue that is often hidden in the shadows - domestic violence. For some, these words may call to mind images of bruises or shouting matches. But in truth, domestic violence is far more complicated, far more widespread, and far more silent than many realize.

Here at Peace Place, we see both sides of this reality. We see the fear, the hurt, and the isolation that abuse can bring. But through our daily work, we also see something a lot more powerful. We see resilience. We see courage. We see hope.

It’s those voices of hope that inspire us to launch this new blog during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Our vision is to create a space where survivors feel seen, where community members learn how to help, and where everyone finds reminders that change is possible.

 
Why We’re Speaking Out
Domestic violence does not discriminate. It affects people of every age, gender, race, and socioeconomic background. National statistics tell us that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. But the reality is that domestic violence is about far more than physical harm. It can take many forms, including emotional abuse, financial control, isolation, and digital harassment.


Yet despite its prevalence, domestic violence is still shrouded in stigma and misunderstanding. Too often, survivors feel blamed, judged, or silenced. Too often, the question asked is “Why didn’t they leave?” rather than “Why was the abuse allowed to continue?”.

Our community deserves a better response. Survivors deserve compassion, not judgment. Families deserve safety, not fear. And children deserve to grow up in homes where love is never confused with control.

That’s why we are speaking out. This blog is one more way we can shine light into the dark corners where abuse hides.


What Survivors Need Most
Through our work—whether in our emergency shelter, our legal advocacy program, support groups, or transitional housing—we hear the same themes over and over again. Survivors need:
  • Safety. A secure place where they can escape immediate danger.
  • Support. Compassionate advocates who listen without judgment and help navigate complex systems.
  • Stability. Access to housing, employment, and financial resources to rebuild their lives.
  • Community. A network of people who believe them, stand by them, and help them heal.
These are the needs we center in everything we do. And through this blog, we hope to extend that circle of support even further, reaching those who may be quietly searching for answers late at night, or those who want to help a loved one but don’t know where to start.
 
What to Expect from This Blog
This month, and in the months to come, we’ll publish posts that explore different aspects of domestic violence and highlight the pathways to healing. Some of the topics you can expect include:
  • Education: Breaking down the different forms domestic violence can take, including the less visible forms of abuse.
  • Stories of Strength: With care and confidentiality, we’ll lift up survivor voices that remind us healing is possible.
  • Resources and Rights: Information about legal protections, safety planning, and available services.
  • How to Help: Practical advice for friends, family members, and community members who want to support survivors.
  • Hope and Healing: Posts that center on resilience, recovery, and building a future free from violence.
Our vision is that this blog will not only inform but also empower—whether you are a survivor seeking encouragement, a supporter searching for ways to help, or a community member eager to learn more.

How You Can Join Us

Awareness is powerful, but awareness alone isn’t enough. True change happens through action. This October, we invite you to join us in whatever way feels right for you:
  • Learn and share. Read our posts and share them with your network. Awareness grows when conversations spread.
  • Volunteer or donate. Support the vital services that provide safety and hope to survivors in our community.
  • Attend events. Participate in awareness walks, vigils, or community programs dedicated to ending domestic violence.
  • Be an ally. If someone you know is experiencing abuse, listen without judgment and connect them to resources.
Every small action creates ripples. Together, those ripples can turn into a wave of change.
